We are pleased to announce a call for applications for the PhD in Human Rights and Peace Studies (International Program) and the MA in Human Rights (International Program), Mahidol University, Thailand.
The PhD in Human Rights and Peace Studies is the only PhD program of its kind in Asia, while the MA is the longest running graduate degree program in Human Rights in Asia. These programs offer a unique opportunity to engage in depth with the highly important issues of human rights and peace in the world today. The objectives of the programs are to produce graduates with excellent research skills and thorough theoretical and conceptual knowledge of these fields, and who are able to apply this knowledge to the field.
Applications must be made on the form attached herewith. The form can also be downloaded from the homepage of the Center for Human Rights Studies and Social Development at www.humanrights-mu.org. The applications will be reviewed twice a year: November 15, 2009 and January 31, 2010 for the academic year beginning in June, 2010. Prospective students are strongly encouraged to apply by November 15, 2009 in order to allow time to arrange financial support for study.

This disseminated information is about the University for PEACE. It is UN's mandated university, known as the Dual Campus Master of Arts in International Peace Studies. The dual campuses are at Atenee De Manila University, Manila, Philippines & the University for UPEACE in Costa Rica. The programme aims the UPEACE students to be the Asian PEACE Leaders. The World Youth Movement for Democracy (www.wymd.org), a youth network of the World Movement for Democracy (www.wmd.org), is pleased to announce the launch of its Global Essay Contest. Fifteen winners (3 in each region: Asia, Central/Eastern Europe & Eurasia, Middle East & North Africa, Latin America & Caribbean, and Sub-Saharan Africa) will be invited to participate in the upcoming 6th Assembly of the World Movement for Democracy in Jakarta, Indonesia, in April 2010.
Questions Democracy has been practiced in different ways and in different contexts. We believe there are core universal democratic values and aspirations that we all share, which transcend our differences, even though we live in different cultures, speak different languages, and eat different food. The purpose of this essay contest is to highlight personal engagement in democracy by promoting critical thinking about the role of young people in democracy and to connect youth with broader democracy movements. The questions posed below for this essay contest aim to challenge youth to write about their perspectives on democracy and their understanding of democracy activism, particularly their own.
Essays are required to address one or more of the following questions: 1. What democratic spaces exist for young people in your society? What do you see as democratic values in your society? How do you engage with them? 2. How can democracy help address your personal and social concerns (poverty, access to education, pandemics, inequality etc.)? How do you and others in your community address these concerns? 3. Describe and explain how a specific event or instance changed your perception of democracy.
Submissions Please submit your essay by 15 September 2009 via email attachment as a Word document or a PDF. Please make sure to clearly designate, in the body of your email, your full name, age, gender, physical address, and phone number, to the relevant regional email address listed below. Essays can be submitted in Arabic, English, French, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish, and the essay must be no more than 2,000 words. Authors must be between 18 and 30 years old.*

Review Process The submitted essays will be reviewed by regional committees each of which will determine three regional winners. The regional winners will be announced on the World Youth Day for Democracy (October 18). If needed, each of the regional committees will also translate the 3 winning essays into English to post on the World Youth Movement for Democracy Website.
Essays will be evaluated based on: * Composition; * Clarity; * Creativity; and * Practicality
Prizes The 15 regional winners (3 from each region) will be provided with sponsorship to cover travel and other expenses related to their participation in the World Movement for Democracy’s Sixth Assembly in Jakarta, Indonesia, in April 2010.* The Assembly, bringing together over 500 democracy activists, scholars, and practitioners from over 100 countries, will provide an opportunity for the Regional Winners to attend workshops and connect with hundreds of civil society leaders from around the world. The May 18 Memorial Foundation Accepts Application for
2009 Gwangju Asian Human Rights Folk School
“I recognized that the power of small individuals could forge and unite in solidarity to bring about the constructive change to the world. Eventually, Gwangju Asian Human Rights Folk School (GAHRFS) was a true moral blessing and encouragement to me” a reflection made by Ms. Ratchada Arpornsilp, participant from Thailand 2007.
The May 18 Memorial Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2009 Gwangju Asian Human Rights Folk School. This year, the application is being made more competitive to screen the number of applications. The emphasis is organizational partnership, so applicants endorsed by their organization will be given priority. Since the foundation will not be able to provide multiple translations, English language will be the medium for exchange.
The GAHRFS aims to contribute to the development of democracy and human rights throughout Asia. Twenty (20) participants will be selected from among applicants from all over Asia who have been working for human rights, peace and democracy. They will be given an opportunity to learn and experience the history and development process of human rights and democracy in Korea(S). The folk school will also serve as an opportunity for participants to exchange and network with other human rights activists.
One of the perks of attending the Folk School is the opportunity to be endorsed for a scholarship. For the last 3 years the foundation has been supporting scholars at Sungkonghoe University studying for their Master of Arts in Inter-Asia NGO Studies (MAINS). They were chosen and selected by the folk school committee based on their active participation and performance during the folk school.
Interested applicants should download the attached form. Applicants are advised to read carefully the guidelines and the rules in order for their application to be considered. The foundation will only accept and consider applicants who will properly comply with the set guidelines and rules.
Useful Information
This year the foundation will accept 20 applicants:
Junior Staff 8 (with 2-5 years experience)
Middle Management/Advisory 8 (with 5-15 years experience)
Senior/Director 4 (with more than 15 years experience)
Applicants should ensure that they have no potential visa problems. If an applicant is denied entry to Korea because of personal history which they did not disclose to the May 18 Memorial Foundation, the foundation will absolutely not cover their travel expenses. This is the applicant’s responsibility.
If an applicant later decides not to come to the folk school (cancels their application) after they have been selected, the May Memorial Foundation will not accept any applications from their organization for three years.
The May 18 Memorial Foundation will cover the following expenses:
l Visa fees
l International airfare to Korea
l Transportation in Korea
l NOTE: Internal airfares (in your country) will be covered if you can prove that the flight is necessary
The following expenses will NOT be covered:
l Internal transportation in your country (for example, to the airport or to the embassy)
l Official fees other than visa fees (for example, travel tax)
The selection committee may change your status if they believe you have entered under the wrong category (for example, if you apply as a senior but have less than 15 years experience).
